Ingredients for this Cobbler

Here's a look at the ingredients you'll need for this Plum Cobbler and why each one plays a role:

  • Fresh Plums: Choose ripe but firm plums that will hold their shape when baked. Their natural sweetness and slight tartness add a bright, juicy flavor to the dessert. Plus, plums are nutrient-rich, making this dessert a touch wholesome!
  • Brown Sugar: Brown sugar complements the sweetness of the plums while adding a hint of molasses, which pairs beautifully with fall spices.
  • Brandy: A small splash of brandy enhances the flavor of the plums and adds a cozy depth that makes the cobbler feel just right for fall. If you prefer to leave it out, you can substitute with apple juice or even a bit of vanilla extract.
  • Cinnamon & Ginger: These warm spices add that comforting, aromatic quality we crave in fall desserts. They blend beautifully with the plums and brandy to create a warm, balanced flavor.
  • All-Purpose Flour & Baking Powder: Flour gives the cobbler topping structure, while baking powder ensures a light, fluffy texture.
  • Butter: Butter brings richness and that flaky, tender quality to the cobbler topping. For a dairy-free version, you can substitute with plant-based butter.
  • Milk or Plant Milk: Just a little milk helps bind the cobbler dough. Feel free to use regular milk, almond milk, or oat milk.

How to Make Fall Plum Cobbler

This Plum Cobbler is a quick and straightforward fall dessert. Here's how to make it:

  1. Prep the Plums: Pit and slice the plums, then toss them in a bowl with brown sugar, brandy, cinnamon, and ginger. Stir until the plums are evenly coated.
  2. Assemble the Cobbler Topping: In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, a little sugar, and a pinch of salt. Cut in the cold butter until you have a crumbly mixture. Add a bit of milk and stir until just combined.
  3. Layer and Bake: Pour the plum filling into a baking dish. Drop spoonfuls of the cobbler topping over the plums, leaving some gaps so the filling can bubble through as it bakes. Bake at 350°F for about 30-35 minutes, or until the topping is golden and the filling is bubbling.
  4. Serve Warm: Let the cobbler cool slightly, then serve it warm. It's fantastic on its own or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!

FAQs About Plum Cobbler

Can I use frozen or canned plums?
Yes, you can use frozen or canned plums if fresh plums aren't available. Just be sure to thaw and drain them before using, as they can release extra liquid that might make the cobbler too soupy.

What other fruits work well in this cobbler?
This recipe is versatile! You can add in apples, blackberries, or even pears for a mix of flavors. Stone fruits like peaches also work well with plums if they're still in season.

Can I make it gluten-free?
Yes, simply substitute the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend that has xanthan gum or another binding agent. Make sure your baking powder is gluten-free too.

How do I know when my cobbler is done?
The cobbler is ready when the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling up around the edges. A toothpick inserted into the topping should come out clean.

What's the best way to store leftovers?
Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven or microwave to warm it up.
